Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a signalling protein that tells skin cells to proliferate and repair. Its clinical career began in wound care; a 2022 review in the International Wound Journal, written by dermatologists at Chung-Ang University College of Medicine in Seoul, surveys how EGF is now used across dermatological practice.

From wound healing to anti-ageing

Because EGF drives keratinocyte proliferation and re-epithelialisation, its first documented uses were in healing wounds and post-procedure skin. The same mechanism is what cosmetic formulators are interested in: skin that renews faster tends to look smoother and more even.

A randomised controlled trial published in Medicina in 2021 tested an EGF-containing ointment as adjuvant therapy for solar lentigines — a controlled clinical setting rather than a consumer test.

Delivery is the hard part

EGF is a large protein, so getting it past the stratum corneum is a formulation problem, not a marketing one. Research groups at Korea University and Inha University Hospital published work in 2026 on an EGF-loaded elastosome formulation developed specifically to improve skin penetration and anti-ageing effects.

A separate study in Annals of Dermatology tested a cross-linked hyaluronic-acid microneedle patch combining acetyl hexapeptide-8 with EGF for anti-wrinkle efficacy on Korean skin — again, a delivery-focused approach.

What clinical testing has measured

A completed pilot study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05724589) at the Institute of Dermatology in Thailand assessed an EGF serum for facial hydration, elasticity, pigmentation and wrinkles using a before-and-after design.
